It was very pleasing to field three senior men’s sides last Saturday with mixed results! The 1st XV won a tight contest at Rugby Camp with Bournemouth RFC 2nd XV, 10-7 (see match report section on this website) and our 2nd XV played at Romsey RFC where captain, Zac Eyley reports:

“Portsmouth travelled to Romsey this weekend chasing the first win of the season. Once again, the penalty count let the side down, killing any chance of developing any sustained attacking pressure. 3 points from the boot of Joe Sillence were the only points Portsmouth were able to take away in the wet conditions.

Portsmouth had a focused scrum training session on Tuesday and it showed with the pack dominating their opposition in every scrum of the afternoon. 2 yellow cards in the second half within a few minutes of each other for offside at the breakdown ramped up the pressure on the Portsmouth defence, leading to a tough score to chase in the last 10 minutes.

Portsmouth gave a gutsy end to the game choosing to tap and go, with repeated heavy carries from Ticker, Bosh and Beesley. Unfortunately handling errors in the rain prevented a score at the end.

Captain Zac Eyley: "it’s an incredibly frustrating result today as the game could have been won if we had been more clinical. What is positive is that the elements we are training during the week are paying off and we know what to target this week to make sure we beat Havant 3s next week at home. I was very impressed with our tight 5 at scrum time today they were unstoppable."

Final score Romsey 22:3 Portsmouth

The 3rd XV was involved in a tense struggle with Eastleigh RFC 3rd XV away at The Hub before succumbing 36-17.

On Sunday, the Valkyries’ 1st XV made the long trip to North Bristol Ladies RFC in a Women’s Championship South West 2 league match but came away second best losing 31-14. The home side scored five tries to our two!

GOINGS ON AT THE CLUB THIS WEEK

Friday, 11th to Sunday 13th – Sid Street Sponsored Cycle Event

In memory of Sid Street’s passing from cancer this summer, two of his close friends and Royal Navy ‘oppo’s’ will be attempting to cycle over a million metres on two static WattBikes in 50 hours for charity.  This will be a non-stop attempt starting at 8am on Friday 11th November and ending at 11am on Sunday 13th Remembrance Sunday, at Rugby Camp, Portsmouth RFC.

The two cyclists, Kerry Packer and Mike ‘Doc’ Cox, are in full training for the event and need as much support as possible, with assistance over the weekend and of course, by financial donations. They will be setting up five static bikes in the Junior Clubhouse – two each for them (in case of breakdowns) and one for anyone that would like to join them pedalling for an hour or two!

As the event will be non-stop, the riders will require support throughout the night as well as the day. Suzi Le Voi, Trojans RFC physiotherapist, is regulating the rider’s diet and training programme. She’ll be on hand over the weekend to keep an eye on their well-being but we need other volunteers to help out over the full 50 hours.

Can you give the riders a couple of hours over the weekend (especially during the nights of Friday and Saturday)? Your contribution would be very welcome and much appreciated!

Our local MP, Penny Mordaunt, will be at the club at 8.30am on the 11th to wish the riders well, so please do come along and support this noble cause for as long as you can, whenever you can over the weekend.
