The England Women’s Rugby World Cup line-up has been announced and we are thrilled that Portsmouth RFC’s own Vickii Cornborough is included in the 32-strong squad.
The elite event takes place between 8th October to 12th November in New Zealand – the first time a Southern Hemisphere nation has hosted the tournament – and will see the world’s top twelve international teams compete to rise victorious as (rugby) champions of the world!
Born and bred in Portsmouth, Vickii currently plays for Harlequins Women in the Allianz Premier 15s, but her journey started as a five-year-old when she joined Portsmouth RFC along with her sister and older brother. Starting out as a No 12, Vickii loved the contact side of the sport and soon became a loosehead prop.
Vickii played her first England match in the Under 19s and Under 20s teams, winning the Under 20s Nations Cup in 2009. Making her international debut in 2015 with the senior team, the outstanding player has now amassed a whopping 70 caps. This will be her second World Cup, having played in the last final in 2017.
Each World Cup match will be broadcast on BT Sport and ITV4 but make sure you set an alarm to watch them live – the first England match (8th October) starts at 4.45am UK time! England are firm favourites to win, having won a record-breaking 25 matches in a row. No wonder they’re ranked the No 1 side in the world.
The whole club – Juniors, Colts, Seniors, Valkyries, committees, players, coaches, managers and supporters – will be rooting for our Vickii over the coming months. Make sure you follow her and the Red Roses’ progress through the competition and show your support!
C’mon England!
